Newbie Question Regarding AI IFR

O.k. you are flying on your flight plan, using AI ATC on an IFR flight. Active Sky warns you of a monster storm along your scheduled flight path. You turn your NAV hold off and turn to avoid the storm. ATC starts telling you to return to heading. If you ignore them long enough they will cancel your IFR, which requires either that an IFR flight plan has to be redone or you are stuck making a VFR approach at your destination airport. How does one deal with this scenario in such a way as to not lose the IFR flight plan?

You can't actually unless you keep answering them until you past the storm.

Or let them cancel your plan and file another Direct GPS flight plan from your departure airport to your destination airport.
This can be done by opening the flight planner and editing your current plan.

You will then have an option to request IFR clearance.

At the moment, AI ATC and weather are not very synchronized. In real life, deviation around cells is the norm and a big part of ATC and typical pilot ops in convective areas. For now the best suggestion for better realism here is live ATC networks or utilizing work-arounds as Dave has mentioned. We do recognize the need for something better here and we're definitely working on it.
